Project: Spencer Academy Trust - Washrooms
Brief
Spencer Academy Trust in Derbyshire appointed Hurst to deliver a comprehensive reconfiguration and refurbishment of multiple toilet areas across several of the Trust’s sites, including primary and secondary schools.
Hurst were successful in winning the tender due to our extensive experience in supplying and installing washrooms, our demonstrated knowledge working in the education sector and our team’s enhanced DBS checks, which enable us to work during term time or manage projects around school holidays.
Result
Working as principal contractor, Hurst effectively managed all aspects of the fit-outs across both sites, ensuring that the works were completed to budget and within the allocated timeframe.
The upgraded facilities and reconfigured layout greatly enhanced the environment, encouraging positive student behaviour. By opening up various areas, Hurst improved accessibility, hygiene and the ability to supervise students effectively.
Scope of Works
- Strip out of and replacement of dated washrooms
- Re-configuration of existing layout
- Installation of new toilets, Solid Grade Laminate toilet cubicles and sanitaryware
- Co-ordinated M&E installations
- Upgrades to lighting and extraction systems
- New floor and ceiling finishes
- Wall and column hygienic cladding
- Upgraded vanity units, wash basins and hand dryers
Challenges
The existing layout at one of the sites featured a partially concealed sink unit behind blockwork, which led to inefficient traffic flow, problematic hidden areas, and limited accessibility.
Additionally, the coordination of works needed to be completed during the school holidays to prevent disruption for staff and students returning after the summer break.

Solution
Hurst proposed a reconfiguration of the layout, removing unnecessary blockwork and repositioning toilet cubicles along back walls. This created open, user-friendly spaces, effectively eliminating hidden areas and enhancing accessibility.
As part of our services, Hurst utilised our in-house M&E team to deliver a comprehensive range of works. This included modernised lighting, heating and extraction systems, M&E installation, and upgraded flooring and ceilings. Additionally, we provided solid-grade laminate toilet cubicles, hygienic cladding and new sanitaryware to significantly enhance both the functionality and hygiene of the space.
